I have used many different measuring tools, however, I have not found a compact storable option. For this project, I want to design a Multi-Size Measuring cup that is compact and storable. I am designing a measuring cup that will be adjustable to different measurements. I have gone through many strategies and designs for the measuring cup to determine the specific sub-assembly that will accomplish my design intent.
I am assuming that the user has the ability to use both of their hands and the user can slide the cylinders by themself. The measuring cup will be used for normal kitchen ingredients, will remain away from direct sunlight for most of the time. Will not be exposed to high heat or freezing temperatures.
The decision matrix above analyzes all three components by comparing the most important aspects of my intended design which are: cost, durability, and manufacturability. Each aspect was given a weight according to its importance to the design with each carrying the same weight, same importance.
The Outside Cylinder turned out to be the most complex/important component. Because it unusual geometry it will require a little more manufacturing work. it will also require a harder more durable thermoset plastic as its exterior which will add to the cost.
The Inside Cylinder though important will not be as difficult to actually produce. it also does not require to be made of an extremely durable material, at least compared to the outside. That is why using a thermoplastic would be the best choice for this particular design.
The Gear tied in importance with the Inside Cylinder. It was not any lower because without either the measuring cup would not function however the gear its self does not require as much attention to detail as the Outside Cylinder. It however needs to be made out of a durable thermoset plastic.
This Gantt chart outlines my scheduled process for this project. I will continue updating as I learn more about the other assignments. A link to the full Gantt chart is located below
Once again, I have learned that more time should be allotted for proper preparation for this assignment. I also more clearly stated the materials that should be used.
